PEGGY JO COOPER

Peggy Jo Cooper, age 77, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Sunday, August 23, 2026, her mother’s birthday, at her home, surrounded by the people she loved most. Peggy was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, wife, and friend. She was a woman who treasured family above all else and found her greatest joy in the simple moments spent together. Her home, her stories, her laughter, and her love will forever remain a part of the lives of those who knew her. Peggy is survived by her children: Douglas Cooper, his wife AJ, and their son Kernon; Daniel Cooper, his wife Crystal; and Meredith Wurtele, her husband Matthew. She also leaves behind a lifetime of cherished memories with her extended family and many loved ones. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gary Lloyd Cooper; her parents, Lee Roy and Ines Newell; her brothers, David and Charles; and her sisters, Barbara and Donna Sue. Peggy retired from Alabama Power Company, and in retirement she and Gary enjoyed traveling together and making memories wherever their journeys took them. She especially loved stopping at estate sales along the way, rarely passing one without taking the time to see what treasures might be waiting inside. Those trips became part of the stories and memories her family will carry with them. Perhaps the greatest gift Peggy received was the gift of family. On her final day, she was surrounded by her children, niece, and nephew. Together, they told stories, looked through old photographs, laughed, and shared memories of the years they had spent together. It was a beautiful reflection of what Peggy had always wanted most: to have all of her children under one roof again, laughing and loving one another. And that is how she spent her final day; with her family close, surrounded by love, laughter, memories, and the people who meant the most to her. Peggy’s life will be remembered not only for the years she lived, but for the love she gave so freely. Her memory will live on in the stories told around family tables, in old photographs, in the laughter of her children and grandson, and in every moment her family gathers together. She will be deeply missed and forever loved. The visitation will be Thursday, August 27, 2026, from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM, at at Peoples Chapel Funeral Home. A graveside service will be at 2:00 PM at Village Falls Cemetery, Bayview.
