LARRY WINFORD HAGOOD

At M.D. Anderson, Larry’s oncologist asked him, “What makes you happy?” His reply was putting his hands in dirt and watching things grow. There is no doubt that for Larry, soil was good for his soul. His backyard is proof positive of his love of nature. He designed a small sanctuary complete with pear, apple, persimmon, fig, blueberry, olive, and plum trees. An arbor created to give shade as vines of grape, blackberry, muscadine, and scuppernong cascade above and along the trellis. He also created a piece of the tropics with banana trees and Meyer lemon trees nurtured from a seed he brought back from his daughter’s home in Bradenton. Terry made sure he had a garden space upon return from M.D. Anderson. On his hands and knees Larry was able to “get his hands dirty” one more time. Maybe this garden is smaller than in years past but it is so much more precious. Larry was a cultivator. A cultivator of friendships, good deeds, and the kindness he shared. Larry knew how to prepare. He was aware of possible ups and downs but knew the richness of the bounty was not based on nature alone but on the time, sweat, and dedication of the planter. When the plants matured he willingly shared his bounty with so many in the community, from fresh vegetables to baked goods. Larry Hagood passed away on July 4, 2022 at the age of 77 surrounded by those he loved most in this world. Today, he has a body brand new. No more pain, free from disease. Our prayer is that the focus will not remain on the loss but to remember the amazing life this man shared with so many. Larry was truly one of the good guys. He was hardworking, strong, loving, and gentle. He was the binding force in the family. He loved deeply and was totally devoted to whatever task was at hand. To say he will be missed is a huge understatement. The lessons he taught in life helped his children and grandchildren grow into the people they are today. He always had the time to sit and explain because he was the “walking book of knowledge.” He shared his laughter. He shared his unbelievable cheesecakes. He shared his love of sports. He shared his love of Jesus. He shared his heart and for this we call ourselves the lucky ones. Larry’s heart was his family. He planned, he prayed, he got his hands dirty as he was involved, and reaped the reward in seeing his family mature into happy and responsible adults. He married his love, the former Betty Hanson, and recently celebrated 56 years of marriage. They enjoyed traveling but some of the best times included reclining in front of the multiple TV wall to watch their favorite sporting events. The team always on the big screen – his beloved Crimson Tide. Left to share his memory with their mom is son Terry (Janet) Hagood and daughter Wendy (Chuck) Buckner (Bradenton, FL). Those that made him buy enough Grandpapa shirts to make a quilt are Blair (Samantha Wade), Bailey Hagood, Dalton Buckner, Rylee Buckner, Josh (Christine) Whitaker, and Jayma (Derek) LaPlante. Brothers: Danny (Pat) Hagood, Donny Hagood, Randy (Pam) Hagood. Sister-in-law, Barbara Dawson. A host of cherished nieces, nephews, and friends. To his church family, you mattered. To the owners and employees of Weldon Pharmacy, you mattered. If you were a part of his world - you mattered. Larry called Concord home for the majority of his life. He was born on July 20, 1944 to the late Winford and Hester Hagood. He was the first of four boys and graduated from Hueytown High School in 1962 and went on to study at Livingston University for a time. He joined the Army National Guard in 1965 and proudly served his country as a Sgt. Major for 39 years. Larry was an active member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church and loved serving his community. Our family wishes to thank everyone who has supported us during his illness and during this difficult time of loss. Your kindness and continued prayers are truly appreciated. Visitation will be Thursday, July 7th from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. and funeral on Friday, July 8th at 11:30 a.m. Burial at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery.
