HERSCHEL DALE REEVES

Herschel Dale Reeves, age 90, passed away on June 18, 2023, surrounded by family. He loved Jesus and wanted everyone to know it. Most recently, he served as a deacon at North Highlands Baptist Church and was devoted to the Care Ministry, handwriting numerous cards to send weekly to those in need. He was a part of this ministry for the past 10 years writing to local people as well as those out of state. This year alone, he sent over 300 cards. He was a dedicated Sunday School teacher and served as a deacon for over sixty years. He was born in Vernon, Alabama, on March 21, 1933, and graduated from Lamar County High School in 1951. He served eight years in the United States Army and Army Reserve stationed on Okinawa and specializing in Crypto Communications. After being discharged from the Army, he began his career as the first motor scout for the Bessemer Police Department. Later, he began selling cars with his good friend and partner at Langston Motor Sales, eventually becoming the owner and running the business for almost 50 years before retiring at the age of 76. Herschel enjoyed his retirement years where he always wanted to be, on the water. He loved to spend time on the river fishing, boating and baiting hooks for the kids and grandkids. One of his favorite events was the annual Independence Day gathering at the river when he insisted on slaving over a hot grill and driving the boat until everyone was waterlogged and sunburned. He took great pride in calling “kitty kitty” and seeing catfish come to eat at his pier. Herschel was proud to recently celebrate his 90th birthday with family and friends at North Highlands Baptist Church. Always the April Fool’s Day prankster, his daughters were finally able to reciprocate with a surprise party on April 1st. Mr. Reeves is preceded in death by his parents, Lewis Cebron Reeves and Ora Mae Jackson Reeves, brothers Howard Reeves (Carolyn) and Jim Reeves (Carolyn). He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Carolyn (yes, they all married Carolyns); Cindy Nicholson (Jerry) of Pelham, Alabama; Dawn Reeves Garaj (Peter) of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and Catherine “Ree” Harper (Russ) of Steele, Alabama; sister, Mary Helen (Ross) Finch of Metairie, Louisiana; 9 grandchildren (Catherine, Alexandra, Reagan, Courtney, Clint, Chandler, Ethan, Bella and Ziva); 4 great grandchildren (Nash, Camille, Colt and Nick), and many other family members and friends. The visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, June 22, 2023, at North Highlands Baptist Church. The funeral service will be at 11:00 AM on June 23, 2023, at North Highlands Baptist Church, with Bro. Michael Wallace officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Baptist Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in the name of Herschel Reeves to the Care Ministry of North Highlands Baptist Church.
