GEORGE "BUTCH" MARVIN WILSON III

George Marvin “Butch” Wilson III, 84, of McCalla, Alabama, passed away at his home April 3, 2026 after a bravely fought battle with cancer. He was born September 18, 1941 to George Marvin Wilson, Jr. and Gertrude Hammonds Wilson of Hueytown, Alabama. Butch is preceded in death by his father George M. Wilson, Jr.; mother Gertrude H. Wilson; and sister Martha Lowrey. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Susie Vines Wilson; daughter Stacy Truett (Martin); son George Frank Wilson; grandson Alan Truett; granddaughter Kimberly Truett; and brother-in-law Milford Lowrey. After graduating from Hueytown High School in 1959, Butch attended the University of Alabama where he played for the legendary Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant and helped win a national championship in 1961. After graduating Butch was drafted by the Baltimore Colts of the NFL where he played five seasons and then an additional two seasons for the New York Giants. Before leaving for Baltimore, Butch married the love of his life Susie Vines. Together they raised two children and enjoyed two grandchildren. Their strong marriage of 62 years was filled with many happy memories. After his 7 years in the NFL, Butch returned home and purchased a sporting goods store in Bessemer, Alabama which he later expanded to four stores and successfully operated his business for 43 years. He raised his family and developed many lasting relationships and friendships in the community that enriched his life. Despite his success in football and business, Butch will be remembered most by his family as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. In 1986, butch moved his family to “the farm” in McCalla where he enjoyed his land and his animals. Throughout his journey of 84 years Butch touched many lives with his wisdom, humor, and unwavering spirit of perseverance. He will be greatly missed and forever remembered. We are forever grateful for the support and care they provided our entire family. A private family visitation will be held at Peoples Chapel Funeral Home in Hueytown, followed by a private graveside burial.
