FRED "CHICKEN" SALTER

Fred “Chicken” Salter, age 82, of Hueytown, passed away Sunday, January 25, 2015. Services will be Wednesday January 28, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church with Josh Cook and Ray Glover officiating. Burial will follow at the Salter Family Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday January 27, 2015 from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Carolyn Salter; children, Cheryl Mason of Tupelo, Miss., Terry Salter (Amy) of Oak Grove, Tracey Morgan (Donny) of Oak Grove, and Jeff Salter (Amy) of Hueytown; grandchildren, Holly Mason, Brittany Humphryes (Scott), Ashley Anderson (Devin), Allison Salter, Nikki Morgan, Cole Salter, and Nolan Salter; and his in-laws, Coleman and Lela Hubbard. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nolan and Freda Salter; twinbrother, Ted Salter; sister, Billie Parris; and son-in-law, Wayne Mason. Chicken was a 1952 graduate of Hueytown High School. A multi-sport athlete, he played baseball for the University of Alabama, the U.S. Army, and the St. Louis Cardinals farm system before an injury ended his playing career. Chicken proved to be a prolific coach as well; the Little League teams he coached participated in multiple Little League World Series and won in 1963. Additionally, he umpired and refereed various baseball and basketball leagues until the age of 80. Chicken retired from both Atlantic Richfield Oil and Jim Walter Resources. He was a faithful member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church and eventually served as Deacon, a role he proudly held. He also was employed at the Pleasant Ridge Life Center and was responsible for coordinating church league basketball. For his many years of service, he was awarded Humanitarian of the Year in 2010 by the Hueytown Area Chamber of Commerce. He will always be remembered for his example of strength and his devotion to God, family, fellow church members, and the community. Honorary pallbearers are the Pleasant Ridge Men’s #7 Sunday School Class and former baseball players and coaches who played for or against Chicken in some capacity, as he cherished every one of these friendships. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church or New Beacon Hospice.
