FORREST NEAL SALTER

Forrest Neal Salter was born on April 8, 1945 and passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 21, 2016. Neal is survived by his wife of 18 years, Wendy Smitherman; son Wesley Salter (Julie); daughter Jamie Daniels (Barry); step-daughter Chassity Smitherman (Mike Jacks); step-son Blake Smitherman; six grandchildren, two great grandchildren; two sisters Joy Swigart (Doug), and Nancy Beasley (David); one niece, three nephews, and many cousins and other family members and friends. Upon graduation from Hueytown High School, at age 18, Neal went to work at Acipco and stayed there until retirement. Neal was gifted with speed, agility, and a competitive spirit, which led to a very active life. He loved music and was voted Best Dancer by his senior high school class. He excelled in sports-baseball, football, and skating. He also played softball and basketball on his church team. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially coon hunting and was proud of his championship coon dogs. Neal loved to ride horses and was a fantastic trick-rider. He loved speed and roared up and down the river in his jet boat. He raced motorcycles and cars. He raced in drag races at various places, including the old Bessemer Airport, competing against OJ Tommy Charles and his Corvette. He raced at BIR, along with the "Alabama Gang" and won the State Limited Sportsman Division Championship in 1974. He was a good mechanic and liked cars, owning some nice ones, including some Corvettes. There is a song entitled "Thank God for a Mama Who Knew How To Pray." Neal had such a mama. Because of her prayers, Neal survived being hit by a car as a child, playing sports, having wrecks on and off the race tracks, being thrown off horses, and many other near-catastrophes. He survived to live the Bible's promised time of three score and ten, to be 70 years old, and to accept his mother's Saviour as his own. Visitation will be Monday, January 25, 2016, from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, at Peoples Chapel Funeral Home in Hueytown. Neal will lie in state from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at Rock Creek Church of God, on Tuesday, January 26, 2016. The funeral service will be at 11:00 AM at the Church. Burial will follow at the adjoining Cemetery.
