TRACY BYERS VICKERS

Tracy Byers Vickers, 55, of Hueytown, Alabama, went to be with our Lord on the morning of June 4, 2017. Tracy was born in Birmingham and was a lifelong resident of Hueytown. She was a member of the Hueytown High School Class of 1980, where she was a cheerleader, Salutatorian, and member of numerous clubs and organizations. She was the recipient of the prestigious H.F. Gilmore Memorial Award. She was later awarded a full scholarship to the University of Alabama at Birmingham where she earned Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Education, graduated Summa Cum Laude, and was named Outstanding Undergraduate Student. Tracy began her career as a kindergarten teacher at Alliance Elementary School in 1984. She went on to teach at Oak Grove Elementary in 2000. Tracy poured her heart and soul into teaching every day. She adored her students and it showed. She was the recipient of several awards of excellence before retiring in 2006. Tracy loved spending time with her family, friends, and beloved cat, Lily. She was the kindest, most thoughtful person, and truly never met a stranger. So many people were privileged to call her a friend. She loved to send cards for every holiday and occasion. Once you met Tracy, you instantly became part of her mailing list. Often, she simply sent a note to tell someone how much he or she meant to her. Tracy was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Hueytown and spent many hours volunteering for WEAC. She loved joining friends for lunch and shopping dates. She was happiest when spending time with her family at the beach. She is preceded in death by her grandparents, Ruth and Willard Thigpen; her father, John D. Byers; and her sister, Tammy Byers, brother Jimmy McCain. Survivors include her devoted husband, Mark Gregory Vickers; her children, Savannah Rhodes Pruitt (Benji), Shelby Vickers Adams (Kris), and Garrett Vickers; her granddaughter, Adah Adams; her parents, Ann and Jim McCain; sisters Kimberly McCain Ennis (Steve), and Donna McCain O'Brien (Mike); nephews, Christian Byars (Hannah) and Brandon Byars, and numerous family members, friends, and former students. The family will receive friends at Peoples Chapel Funeral Home in Hueytown from 11:00 A.M. until 2:30 P.M. on Wednesday, June 7, 2017. The funeral will be held at 2:30 P.M at the Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery. Tracy loved fresh flowers and the family would appreciate any remembrances made of her in this manner. Contributions may also be made in her honor to First United Methodist Church of Hueytown.
