JAMES EDWARD HOGG

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James Edward Hogg, age 97, of Bessemer, Alabama, who peacefully went to be with the Lord on December 10, 2024. Born on July 12, 1927, in Bessemer, James was a man whose life was marked by selflessness, love for family, and unwavering commitment to his country and community. At the age of 17, James joined the Merchant Marines, but was soon found to be too young for service and was sent home. Undeterred, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, proudly serving from 1944 to 1946 during the final years of World War II. His service to his country was a testament to his strong sense of duty and patriotism. James was a man who believed in giving back to his community. Whether it was coaching local youth in sports or dropping everything to donate blood when needed, his contributions to society were immeasurable. Above all, he was a devoted father and grandfather, deeply committed to ensuring that his disabled daughter, Linda, had the independence and opportunities to live a fulfilling life. He devoted his time, energy, and resources to Linda’s care and well-being, allowing her to remain immersed in the love of family and community until her passing. He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Thelma; parents, James and Vera Hogg; his daughter, Linda Hogg; his granddaughter, Leslie Hogg; and his brother, Danny Hogg. James is survived by his son, Steve Hogg (Teri); daughter, Lisa Griffith (Brent); his sister, Polly Wood; and his beloved grandchildren, Stephanie Derzis, Justin Griffith (Alvaro), Cody Griffith (Tori), Tyler Griffith (Shea), and great-grandchildren, Alexis Mitchell, Christian Gilbert, Jeslyn Holland, Zoe Griffith, Sadie Griffith, Casey Griffith, Santi Griffith, Colt Griffith, and Amelia Griffith. He was also deeply loved by his lifetime daughter-in-law, Florence Mitchell, as well as, nieces and nephews. A special thanks is extended to Beth Hosmer and the Gentiva staff for their compassionate care and support throughout this journey. James lived a life of service, love, and sacrifice. His memory will be cherished forever by his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him. The visitation will be from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM, Friday, December 13, 2024, at Peoples Chapel Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 11:00 AM at the Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens.
