HIGGINS, CAROLYN SUE On March 7, 2013, Carolyn Sue Higgins (nee Loggins) received the sacrament of eternal life. Carolyn Sue spent her life creating. She crocheted, knitted, quilted and encouraged others to express themselves through crafts. A faithful Navy wife, she travelled to the end of the world (the swamps of Louisiana) with her childhood sweetheart, Fred. They lived in New Orleans, San Francisco, Monterey, San Diego, Memphis, Norfolk, and Jacksonville and returned to their hometown when their service to our country was complete. She loved an adventure and she and Fred took their children exploring everywhere they lived. She received an official commendation from the President of the United States and the Boy Scouts of America for rescuing a 5 year old boy from the jaws of an alligator in 1972 at Jacksonville Naval Air Station. She was the ultimate Den Mother. She won a Best in Show Ribbon at the 1998 Alabama State Fair for a crocheted Santa, complete with sleigh and reindeer. She bowled a 299 game, cause there's always room for improvement. She was devoted to her quilting friends and was at the church every Thursday as long as anyone can remember planning lunch and fitting in some quilting around the edges. The past few years she took pleasure in winning card games at the Senior Center and preparing Meals on Wheels. She is predeceased by her parents, JB and Opal Loggins; her beloved husband of 52 years, Fred Higgins and infant daughter, Susan. She is survived by her sister, Polly Fitzgerald; brother Neil Loggins (Deborah); children, Jeff (Carol), Kyle (Robin), and Carla (Angela); grandchildren, Cara, Taylor, Sarah Kate, and Gil. Her life will be honored on Tuesday March 12, 2013. Visitation is 1p with services at 2p at First United Methodist Church of Sylvan Springs, 5524 Birmingport Road, Sylvan Springs, AL 35118, with interment in the church cemetery. Brother Lee Bryant will officiate. In lieu of flowers, her children ask that you remember her with memorials to The Quilters Fund at the First United Methodist Church of Sylvan Springs at the above address or Sylvan Springs Senior Citizens Center, 300 Town Hall Drive, Sylvan Springs, AL 35118. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of love and support.
