BOBBIE LOUISE DYKES KEMP

Bobbie Louise (Dykes) Kemp went home to be with Our Lord on January 28, 2021. Born in Birmingham, AL in 1929, Mrs. Kemp lived a long, joy-filled life. After high school, she married her best friend’s brother, Eugene Kemp, and joined him at various US Army posts throughout the United States. Upon their return to Birmingham, they welcomed two children into their family, Kay and Steve. Mrs. Kemp was caretaker for several neighborhood children while her husband managed a service station and operated cranes at US Steel. She then worked as an office manager for Mutual Benefit. In her rare moments of spare time, she enjoyed gardening, painting, and quilting. In later life, Bobbie delighted in the accomplishments of her grandchildren Lindsey and Jake. She spent many, many days at plays and baseball games, culminating in a 2006 JUCO-Championship-winning trip for Wallace State Community College’s baseball team to Grand Junction, Colorado. Sister Bobbie was a lifelong member of Vestavia Primitive Baptist Church. Her faith gave her a solid foundation that sustained her throughout good times and bad. Her final days were brightened with the music of the Church’s singers. Mrs. Kemp was preceded in death by her mother Lois Dykes Cook, her father Cary Carlos Dykes, her husband Eugene Kemp, her son Steve Kemp, and her sisters Floree Cash and Jewel Turner. She is survived by her sister Anne (Smith) Hunt, daughter Kay Gassaway and her husband Tom, granddaughter Lindsey Elmore, grandson Jake Elmore and his wife Lauren, great grandsons Walker and Ty Elmore, and multitudes of beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and longtime friends. Her extended family is especially grateful for her interest in researching and documenting our family’s genealogy. They would also like to thank Desiree, Mary, and Jessica of Ivy Creek Hospice for their kind and gracious service for Mrs. Kemp in her final days. Given the pandemic, burial will be private, at Highland Memorial Gardens, with Elder Sam Bryant presiding.
